Important Advising Information at SWOSU

The suggested courses and curriculum information found on program pages should not be used as a substitute for academic advisement from your assigned advisor. It is essential that students meet with their advisor before enrolling to ensure that their chosen courses align with their overall academic plan, schedule, and goals for success.

  • All general education courses must be completed prior to admission to the Surgical Technology program.

To be eligible for admission into the Surgical Technology program, all general education and program-specific courses must be completed with a minimum grade of "C." Students who fail to achieve at least a "C" in any program course will be ineligible to continue in the program.

Clinical Case Requirements

The total number of cases the student must complete is 120. Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 cases in General Surgery. 20 of these cases must be in the First Scrub Role. Students are required to complete a minimum of 90 cases in various surgical specialties. 60 of the cases must be in the First Scrub Role and evenly distributed between a minimum of 4 surgical specialties. However, 15 is the maximum number of cases that can be counted in any one surgical specialty. 10 diagnostic endoscopic cases and 5 vaginal delivery cases can be counted toward the maximum number of Second Scrub Role cases. Observation cases must be documented, but do not count towards the 120 required cases.

CST Exam Requirement

Upon the successful approval of our program’s accreditation, graduated surgical technology students will be eligible to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) exam. This certification is a vital step in your professional journey, as it validates your skills and knowledge in the field of surgical technology.
