Surgical Technology at SWOSU
Surgical technologists are essential allied health professionals trained to be key members of the surgical team. They perform specialized tasks before, during, and after surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include preparing the operating room, establishing a sterile field, and setting up surgical equipment, supplies, and solutions. During surgery, they assist by passing instruments, fluids, and supplies to the surgeon, as well as managing surgical equipment and the sterile field. They also handle specimens and perform counts of sponges and supplies to prevent retained foreign objects. Certification for surgical technologists is achieved by completing an accredited program and passing the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.Let's Get Started
