Dear Students & Parents,
Thank you for taking the time to explore what the Department of Biological Sciences at SWOSU has to offer. Our faculty consists of a dedicated group of expert biologists whose experience span the breadth of biology (i.e., from cells to ecosystems). Our goals are to provide students with both the content knowledge and professional skills they need to be successful in their chosen careers. A biology degree is one of the most versatile degrees a student can achieve. When our students complete their degree they are competitive for a variety of career options including jobs in the medical field, state and federal environmental agencies, teaching, pursuing advanced degrees in biology, and private industry. Our dedicated, knowledgeable students have been very successful evidenced by the fact that more than 90 percent of those that apply are admitted to professional schools (e.g., medical school, dental school, PA school, PT school and veterinary school) and graduate schools in Oklahoma and across the nation.
We have degree options that are tailored to the career interests of our students. All degree options have a common core that provides students broad training in the biological sciences. Upper-division courses vary depending on degree option. We have options with specialization in biomedical sciences, microbiology, medical lab science and environmental biology. For a complete list of degree options see the “Degree Information” tab on our website.
In addition to course work, students also have opportunities to participate in research under the direction of faculty. These experiences allow students to use the skills and information they learn in classes to expand our knowledge of the natural world. Research also allows students to hone important professional skills (e.g., critical thinking, communication and analytical skills) that will serve them well regardless of their career path. Finally, research experience looks great on a job or professional school application. We also have several student clubs (e.g., Biology Club, Medical Professionals Club, Pre-vet Club, Environmental Conservation Club) that enrich the learning environment for our students.
The Department of Biological Sciences is committed to providing students an inclusive and nurturing learning environment to explore their curiosity about the natural world. If you would like to learn more about our department, please contact us to set up a tour of our facilities and to discuss degree and career options with our faculty.
Sincerely,
