Southwestern Oklahoma State University hosts a chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma, the National Physics Honor Society. Its primary objective is to reward and recognize individuals of high scholarship and promise of achievement in physics or related fields.
Founded in 1921 at Davidson College, Sigma Pi Sigma is an Affiliated Society of the both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute of Physics and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Since 1968 it has functioned as an honor society operating within the framework of the Society of Physics Students.
Invitations to join Sigma Pi Sigma are offered annually to students who have met the criteria of high scholarship in physics as evidenced by completion of physics courses, class rank, and grade point average (overall and within the discipline). The induction ceremony for new members is held each year in conjunction with the annual Physics Spring Banquet. Southwestern's Chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma held its first initiation in 1969. Since that time, 182 members have been inducted.
