SWOSU PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING
CLUB
ACTIVITIES!
-
Welcome-Back
Hamburger Fry
-
Early each fall, SPEC sponsors a hamburger
fry to welcome back returning members and to introduce potential new members
to the club. Hamburgers with all the trimmings are free to all.
The meal and a very brief "meeting" to introduce everyone is usually followed
by volleyball and other fun activities.
-
Guest
Speakers
-
Each year SPEC invites speakers (from
SWOSU and around the nation) to give talks of interest to physicists and
engineers to its members during regular meetings.
-
Camping
Trip
-
As autumn leaves take on color and
the days grow shorter and cooler, SPEC hits the road for its annual fall
camping trip. Pack your tent and sleeping bag and rustle up some
weiners and marshmallows to cook over the camp fire!
-
Halloween
Party
-
Witches and goblins and ghosts--oh
my! It's time for SPEC's annual Halloween Party and Scavenger Hunt.
After competing to see which group of tricksters (costumes optional) can
collect the most items on a very unusual shopping list, it's time for the
treats and games.
-
Physics
Day
-
Each fall, SPEC in conjuction with
SWOSU
Physics sponsors a Physics Day
for area high school students. Approximately 150 visitors are treated
to a wide variety of information and educational demonstrations (with a
very high "WOW" factor) of the priciples of physics. They also receive
information on education in physics and possible career paths. Club
members act as coordinators, guides, and demonstrators in the half-day
event.
-
Christmas
Party
-
In the midst of Finals Week, just when
everyone needs a real break from studying, SPEC comes to the rescue with
its annual Christmas Party. Lots of food and games and and entertaining
gift exchange keeps everyone merry.
-
SPS Zone Meetings
-
SPEC sponsors trips each year to area
SPS
Zone meetings where members can hear and/or present talks on undergraduate
research in physics as well as more general talks presented by invited
speakers. These meetings also provide the opportunity to meet with
students from other universities.
-
Lab
Tours
-
Each spring, SPEC sponsors a major
trip to a national lab or major employer for a tour of the facilities.
Students have a chance to see physics and engineering in action and to
interact with potential employers.
-
Spring Banquet
-
Just when it seems the year will never
end, SPEC breaks the monotony by sponsoring its annual Spring Banquet to
induct new Sigma Pi Sigma (the national
physics honor society) members, honor outstanding students, present scholarships
for the following year, and welcome back visiting alumni.
-
Shish-Ke-Bob
-
The final to-do of the year is SPEC's
one-of-a-kind shish-ke-bob, held annually on Saturday in the middle of
the spring semester's Finals Week. The food is fabulous and plentiful.
Volleyball and other games keep everyone active. Perhaps most entertaining
of all is the presentation of awards to both faculty and students for various
"special talents." Not to be missed!
