SWOSU Chemistry Students Present Research at ACS Meeting

Seven Southwestern Oklahoma State University chemistry majors at Weatherford recently accompanied their research advisors to the 235th American Chemical Society national meeting in New Orleans and presented poster presentations at the event. Attending were (from left): David Supeck, Tulsa (Berryhill); Neil Funwie, Weatherford; Candace Benda, Union City; Cammi Valdez, Enid; Serena Hageman, Elk City; Amy Cain, Indiahoma; and Garrett Scott, Granite.

Seven Southwestern Oklahoma State University chemistry majors at Weatherford recently accompanied their research advisors to the 235^th American Chemical Society national meeting in New Orleans. 

The SWOSU contingent attended seminars, symposia, short courses, and poster sessions throughout the four-day event. The students and professors attended talks and posters sessions that were of interest to them individually, selecting from a varied and extensive set of offerings.

Additionally, each student presented a poster representing their own research. Usually, an abstract or written summary is included along with recent data and conclusions that have come from laboratory work performed by the student or group of students, under the supervision of their faculty research advisor. The poster presenter answers questions and clarifies the project goals and outcomes to interested parties.

SWOSU Assistant Professor Dr. Tim Hubin said the poster presentations were the scientific highlight of the trip for the SWOSU students and faculty, as they talked in detail about what they have worked so hard on for several semesters, or even years, in the chemistry labs at SWOSU.

SWOSU attendees included:

• Hubin and his students Neil Funwie of Weatherford and Amy Cain of Indiahoma who presented the following two posters: “Synthesis and Crystallographic Studies of a Series of Xylyl Bicyclam Analogues” and “Project format for the undergraduate inorganic lab at SWOSU”
• Professor Jason Johnson and his students Serena Hageman of Elk City, Candace Benda of Union City and Garrett Scott of Granite who presented the following two posters: “Differential dynamic response of ATP-grasp domains within carbamoyl phosphate synthetase” and “Engineering probes to assess synchronization mechanisms in amidotransferase-containing proteins”
• Professor William Kelly and his students Cammi Valdez of Enid and David Supeck of Tulsa (Berryhill) who presented the following poster: “Flex-hets demonstrate mixed inhibition of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase in bovine heart muscle sub-mitochondrial particles”
