SWOSU Nursing Students Work With Children

A group of junior nursing students at Southwestern Oklahoma State University recently performed growth and developmental assessments at Weatherford's Head Start program.

Grace Nelson of the Weatherford Head Start program looks in SWOSU student Geraldine Piterrechu’s ear with an otoscope. Burnett said this type of play allows preschoolers to overcome fear of medical equipment.

Shawn Stinson, assisted by SWOSU student Sabrina Shell, looks in Jonathon Soto's ear.

The nursing students are currently enrolled in Child Health Nursing under the supervision of Daphne Burnett and Vicki Montgomery. 

The objective for the supervised clinical is to get comfortable with communicating with children of a preschool age as well as begin to adapt physical assessment techniques on children.
