Public Domain & Open Source Ebooks

Project Gutenberg
You will find classic books from the start of this century and previous centuries, from authors including Shakespeare, Poe, Dante, as well as well-loved favorites like the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the Tarzan and Mars books of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jane Austen, and over 15,500 other books. Books are almost always available in plain text format, with many in HTML and other formats. Other than books, additional content types include musical scores, movies and sound files. Most Project Gutenberg ebooks are in the public domain in the US, so tend to be from items published prior to 1923.

LibriVox
LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net. Their goal is to make all public domain books available as free high-quality audio books. LibriVox is a totally volunteer, open source, free content, public domain project.
