Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie

October 30, 2009

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State fashioned a 1-1 tie against Texas Woman's University in the most spectacular of fashion.

Christina Kneedler tied the game in the closing seconds when she pushed through a shot after taking a pass from teammate Elyse Berta's corner kick. Kneedler's goal came with just 21 seconds to play and sent the Bulldogs into a wild celebration while the Pioneers walked off in stunned belief.

Neither team made a threat to score in the two overtime periods as the match ended in a draw after 110 minutes. The tie left SWOSU's overall record at 6-10-2 and 3-5-1 in Lone Star Conference play. TWU is now 8-7-1 and 5-3-1. The tie eliminated SWOSU from LSC Tournament consideration. The Bulldogs needed victories in both of their final matches to have a chance of qualifying for the six-team post-season tournament.

Still with the disappointing elimination, SWOSU coach Mark Persson was proud of the effort his team showed.

"I think it says a lot of the type of character we have," Persson said. "All season long we have played to the final horn and this time it paid off. I thought we were the clear aggressor in overtime but we just weren't able to come away with a score."

SWOSU had the only two shots in overtime. For the game, TWU ended outshooting the Bulldogs by an 18-11 margin.

SWOSU will close its 2009 season Sunday at home against Texas A&M-Commerce. Game time is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
