Soccer Beats ECU, 2-1
October 17, 2009
ADA, Okla. - The Southwestern Oklahoma State University women's soccer team continued its steady climb up the Lone Star Conference standings with a 2-1 victory Sunday at East Central University.
The win improved the Bulldogs to 6-9-1 overall and 3-4 in league play. ECU fell to 5-5-2 and 2-4 with the loss. SWOSU currently sits in seventh place in the LSC standings one game out of sixth. The Bulldogs have three games remaining this season, all of which are at home, against teams ahead of them in the standings. SWOSU will need wins in no fewer than two of the three if they are hopeful of making their first-ever LSC Postseason Tournament appearance.
Caitlin O'Brien was the hero of the ECU game scoring the game winning goal with just five seconds to play. O'Brien's winner came after a well-executed pass by teammate Josie Price.
SWOSU had only moments earlier tied the game at 1-1 when Korey Hearn delivered a header into the net after a corner kick by Tera Santistevan in the 62nd minute. The goal for Hearn was her eighth of the season and puts her as the sole owner of the school's single season scoring record.
ECU scored the game's first goal when Whitney Watts scored in the 42nd minute off a through ball from a free kick by teammate Ashleigh Peete.
Both teams played well defensively as neither squad could get off many shots. ECU finished the game with six shots while SWOSU added five.
