Soccer Gets First Win

September 11, 2009

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University rode the strength of an early scoring flurry to capture its first win of the season defeating visiting Mid America Christian, 2-1, in women's soccer action Friday in Weatherford.

The Bulldogs improved to 1-3-1 and will now face NAIA rival Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva on Sunday. Mid America Christian dropped to 1-3 with the loss. SWOSU's next home game is Tuesday against Southern Nazarene.

Elyse Berta and Josie Price each scored goals in the first 14 minutes of the game that put the Bulldogs ahead comfortably from the beginning. Berta's goal came with only 45 seconds elapsed when she took a well-timed pass from teammate Courtney Hailey.

Berta then set up SWOSU's next goal with a corner kick that she delivered right to Josie Price who poked the ball into the back of the net on a nifty header with 14:05 played. Both goals for Berta and Price were their first of the season.

Mid America Christian cut the lead in half just before break when Kassie Shivers scored on an unassisted goal with 31 minutes played.

New SWOSU coach Mark Persson was pleased with gaining the team's first win of the season but still felt the team had room for improvement.

"We did a good job in the first half, but I felt we need to do a better job on making our scoring opportunities more productive," Persson said.

SWOSU outshout the Evangels 15-12 with Price delivering a team-high five shots for the Bulldogs.
