Soccer Starts 2009 Season

MARYVILLE, MO - Southwestern Oklahoma State University's soccer team began its 2009 season playing two opponents from the state of Missouri on the road. The Bulldogs put together a solid effort in both contests before falling short in each one. SWOSU lost Saturday to Northwest Missouri 1-0 in double-overtime and then were blanked 2-0 by Missouri Western on Saturday.
SWOSU will next play Friday at Kansas Newman University in Wichita, Kan.
The Bulldogs fought Northwest Missouri in a scoreless tie that ended in the first minute of double-overtime. Amanda Bundrant punched through a goal in the game's 101st minute to end the game for the Bearkats.
Northwest had a number of opportunities taking 22 shots with 13 of them on goal. SWOSU goalkeeper Katie Mahoney sparkled defensively as she was credited with 12 saves in the game.
SWOSU managed just three shots in the game against NWMS, one each by Josie Price, Stephanie Kneedler and Courtney Hailey.
In the second game, Missouri Western's Jessica Martin scored a goal in the 24th minute and again in the game's 77th minute to provide the 2-0 margin. The second goal was from a header that was delivered by teammate Erin Widrig on a corner kick.
SWOSU had twice as many shots as the day before delivering six shots, with four of them on goal. Elyse Berta had three in the game while Stephanie Holladay, Samantha Dobson and Korey Hearn added a shot apiece.
