Soccer Beats Wayne State
August 31, 2008
EDMOND, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University had nationally-ranked Central Missouri State on the ropes for much of the first half only to see the Jennies pull away for a 7-2 victory in a soccer match played Friday in Edmond.
SWOSU, 1-2, will continue play in Edmond when they meet Truman State University at 12 p.m. on Sunday. CMSU improves to 2-1 on the year.
The Bulldogs stunned CMSU early by scoring the game’s first goal when Lorina Salinas got loose behind the Jennies defense and took a well-timed pass by Elyse Berta in the game’s 12th minute. The goal, Salinas’s second of the year, came on SWOSU’s first shot and only after CMSU had sprayed seven at the Bulldogs goal.
SWOSU pulled ahead 2-0 later when Weatherford’s Sarah Sibley arched a shot over the CMSU keeper in the 41st minute. Berta was again on the assist as she found Sibley on the doorstep, just inside the square. SWOSU had two shots and two goals while CMSU had misfired on their first 16 attempts.
That would be all the scoring for SWOSU as CMSU finally got on the board just before halftime when Katie O’Keefe scored in the 42nd minute.
The Jennies scored three goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half, including two within a span of 46 seconds to move ahead 4-2.
They added three more including their last in the 87th minute to make the final in their favor, 7-2.
CMSU attempted 41 shots while SWOSU managed four. SWOSU goalkeeper Becky Hilterbran had 11 saves before being lifted for Lauren Mason.
