Women Lose to NSU, 55-53

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University battled to the very end but were unable to push past Northeastern State University losing 55-53 in a women's basketball game Wednesday in Weatherford. The loss dropped SWOSU 8-18 overall and eliminated them from Lone Star Conference Tournament consideration with a 4-9 division record.
The Bulldogs had a chance to send the game into overtime as they worked to get a shot for their top scorer Lucy Ramon as the scoreboard clock ticked down. Ramon broke free just inside the free throw line but left her 12-foot shot fell short and NSU grabbed the rebound as the as time expired.
Ramon and teammate Tobey Beer had 10 points to lead SWOSU in scoring. NSU was led by Alix Perkins with 13 points. The RiverHawks improved to 16-11 overall and 7-6 in the LSC North and clinched the fourth and final tournament berth for the division
The Bulldogs were down by as many as 10 points midway through the second half as NSU carried a 51-41 lead after a basket by Cristy Nitz at the 11:52 mark. SWOSU held NSU to just four points the rest of the way and slowly crawled back in the game.
Jennifer DeGarmo got SWOSU to within four at 55-51 when she swished a three-pointer at the 3:12 mark. Ramon then scored at the 2:38 mark to make it 55-53 in favor of NSU. Neither team scored in the final 2:38 as both missed shots from the field and turned the ball over when they had possession.
SWOSU ended the game making 42% of its shots on 18-of-43 attempts. NSU shot the same making 43% on 19-of-44 attempts. SWOSU hurt itself by making just 56% of its free throw attempts, connecting on 10-of-18. The Bulldogs were just three-of-nine for 33% in the second half.
SWOSU will end its season Saturday on the road against LSC North leader Central Oklahoma. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Edmond.
