Women Lose to Cameron
February 11, 2009
LAWTON, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University's road to a possible conference tournament berth became a bit more difficult as Cameron handed the Bulldogs a 69-61 setback in a women's basketball game Wednesday in Lawton.
The loss dropped SWOSU to 7-15 overall and 3-6 in the Lone Star Conference North Division race. SWOSU now faces what will be an almost must-win game when they host Texas Woman's Saturday in Weatherford. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
Jennifer DeGarmo had 17 points and Shanessa Smith added 15 for SWOSU who led for much of the game and carried a lead into the later portions of the second half. Tobey Beer gave SWOSU its last lead when she knocked down a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs ahead 50-47 with 6:05 to play.
Cameron then caught fire and outscored the Bulldogs 16-2 over the next five minutes. The Aggies Kristi Taylor finished with 32 points and was critical in the charge scoring inside, outside and from the free throw line. SWOSU missed five consecutive three-pointers during that span and only free throws from Courtney Harper at the four-minute mark were the only points for the Bulldogs.
SWOSU finished the game making 39% of its shots on 20-of-51 attempts. The Bulldogs were 14-of-17 from the free throw line but did not shoot as many as the home team. Cameron visited the line 32 times and made 25 for a 79%. The Aggies out rebounded SWOSU by a 41-22 margin as they won their first North division game in nine tries. Cameron's overall record improved to 6-16 with the win.
