Women Tame Tigers, 59-47

WEATHERFORD - Southwestern Oklahoma State University got itself back in position for a possible berth in the Lone Star Conference tournament with a 59-47 victory over visiting East Central University in a women's basketball game Saturday.

Allie Burdan had 14 points to lead the Bulldogs as SWOSU improved its overall record to 7-12 on the season and 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. Burdan hit several clutch free in the final minutes to help SWOSU pull out what had been a tight ballgame for much of the contest.

SWOSU carried a 48-44 lead with four minutes to play before putting on a strong kick, leaving the Tigers in their wake. Erin Wright nailed a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 51-44 with 2:08 to play. Jennifer DeGarmo scored on an inside jumper and the lead was 53-45 with 1:07 left. ECU would not get closer as Burdan and her teammates made a number of free throws in the final seconds.

SWOSU finished the game making 21-of-30 attempts for 70%. ECU made just eight-of-16 attempts for 50% at the free throw line.

ECU, which was led by Kacey Thomas with 18 points, fell to 7-13 and 1-5 overall.

SWOSU used 12 players, nine of which scored. Wright and Lucy Ramon were next in the scoring column with eight points apiece.

SWOSU made 17-of-44 shots from the field for 39% while limiting ECU to just 29% on 16-of-56 attempts. The Bulldogs carried a 39-37 advantage in the rebounding category and turned the ball over three fewer times.

SWOSU will next play Wednesday at Texas A&M-Commerce before returning home to play the same team Saturday, Feb. 7. Tipoff for the game will be at 2 p.m.
