January 24, 2009

DENTON, Texas - Southwestern Oklahoma State University continued to build on its new-found momentum and picked up an important women's basketball victory with a 59-50 win against Texas Woman's University Saturday in Denton, Texas.

The win, SWOSU's second straight, improved the Bulldogs to 6-11 on the year and evened its Lone Star Conference North Division record at 2-2. TWU fell to 10-7 and 1-3 with the loss.

Jenna Sprague scored 15 points and Jennifer DeGarmo added 13 for the Bulldogs who won for back-to-back games for the first time this season. SWOSU was 67-59 winners against Cameron on Wednesday.

SWOSU led much of the game and took control early in the second half. SWOSU held a slim 23-20 lead at the break only to see the Pioneers come back and get within one point on two occasions, the last was at 26-25 with 15:20 to play.

TWU got as close as three points one other time, but again the Bulldogs had an answer. Sprague and Shanessa Smith scored underneath and DeGarmo connected on a three-point bomb and the game was in hand with SWOSU leading 53-40 with 1:46 to play.

SWOSU ended out shooting the Pionners by a considerable margin. The Bulldogs made 39% of their shots on 20-of-51 attempts while the Pioneers made just 23% of their 59 attempts, making just 14.

The Bulldogs out rebounded TWU by a 45-43 margin. Courtney Harper, DeGarmo and Sprague each had eight to lead SWOSU in that category.
