Jennifer DeGarmo had 13 points to help the Bulldogs snap what had grown to be a four-game losing streak. SWOSU's record now stands at 4-9 as it begins Lone Star Conference North Division play Wednesday night against Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.
The Bulldogs owners of a 16-point first-half lead had to hold on at the end as the Mustangs rallied in the final moments. MSU closed to within one-point when Katiya Jackson sunk two free throws to slice SWOSU's lead to 53-52 with 2:05 to play.
SWOSU did not blink as Tobey Beer answered with a short jumper to put SWOSU ahead 53-50 with 1:42 to play. Beer's basket was her only shot attempt of the game.
Regiane Araujo got the Mustangs to within one again at 53-52 when she answered with a layup with 1:28 to play. SWOSU was whistled for a shot clock violation with nine seconds to play giving MSU one final chance.
Mustang guard Michelle Duff dribbled the length of the court and appeared to be in good shape but lost the ball and a scramble then ensued as the horn sounded before Midwestern could get off a shot attempt.
SWOSU made 22-of-53 shots from the field for 42% while the Mustangs managed to make just 29% on 17-of-58 attempts. MSU stayed close by taking advantage of some extra free throw attempts. The Mustangs were 15-of-23 for 65% while SWOSU visited the stripe just five times and made four.
MSU won the rebound battle 42-35 but SWOSU's Jenna Sprague had the most boards of any player on the floor pulling down 13.
