April 24, 2009
WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University was on the wrong end of two lopsided baseball scores losing 27-5 and 18-12 to visiting Cameron University in a doubleheader Friday in Weatherford. The two teams resume their series Saturday with two games in Lawton scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
The losses put SWOSU in a tight spot as the Bulldogs are attempting to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Tournament. SWOSU now at 28-23 overall is in a four-way tie with Eastern New Mexico, Central Oklahoma and Southeastern Oklahoma State at 21-21 in league play. Only two of those four teams will qualify for the final two available berths in the tournament.
The Bulldogs are expected to throw freshmen Drake Accord and Aldemar Betrian against the Aggies Saturday who lead the LSC with a 39-13 mark and are 30-12 in league play.
In the opener, Cameron rattled 22 hits off seven different SWOSU pitchers. The Aggies smashed five home runs, including three by designated hitter Nate Arevalo who ended the game four-for-five with seven RBI's.
Chris Morrison had a home run for SWOSU and Jon Andrew Martin and Taylor Wilcox each had two hits for the team.
In the second game, SWOSU was ahead 7-6 through four only to see the Aggies pull away scoring four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to go up 15-7. Nelson Espinal went five-for-six for the Bulldogs with a pair of home runs and five RBI's while Ricky Kirby had four base hits to keep his season batting average above .400.
