Baseball Wins ENMU Series
April 4, 2009
WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University emerged with a 20-15 victory in the final game of its baseball doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico University to take the series by a 3-1 margin. ENMU won the first game Saturday 16-6.
SWOSU improved to 26-14 and remained comfortably in fourth place in the Lone Star conference with a 20-12 league mark. The Bulldogs will most likely need to win just three of their eight remaining LSC games to assure a berth in the league's post-season tournament next month in Abilene, Texas. SWOSU will next play a four-game series at Angelo State University beginning on Friday. SWOSU will next play at home Friday, April 17 against Tarleton State.
In the nightcap, SWOSU worked over four different ENMU pitchers to the tune of 20 hits. The Bulldogs jumped in front to stay in the fifth inning. Trailing 8-7, SWOSU hung eight runs on the Greyhounds thanks primarily to Bow Buckner's grand slam. Buckner finished the game with three hits, he was one of six different Bulldogs to have multiple hits in the game.
Kenny Hare went three-for-six and drove in four runs, including hitting his fourth home run of the year with a two-run shot in the fifth. Ricky Kirby also collected three hits while hitting his fourth home run of the year with a solo blast in the fourth. Jon Andrew Martin also had three hits while Blake Mounce added four in five plate appearances.
Chris Morrison became the first Bulldog pitcher to collect win number five on the year. He worked through six and two-thirds innings before Jason Stover came on to pitch the final two-plus innings in relief.
In the first game, little went right for SWOSU as the Bulldogs were down 13-0 after four innings. The Bulldogs did swing the bat better in the final innings scoring six runs. The highlight was Travis Rose's record-tying 13th home run of the season when he smashed a two-run homer in the seventh. Cope tied the season home run mark set by Rodney Cope in the 1998 season.
