WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s remarkable climb up the Lone Star Conference North Division baseball standings shifted into high gear as the Bulldogs swept Cameron University in a doubleheader Saturday. SWOSU won both games in dramatic come-from-behind fashion taking the first game 6-5 and completing the sweep with a 4-3 victory in the second game.

The wins, SWOSU’s seventh and eighth in the last 11 games, leaves the Bulldogs alone in first in the LSC North with a 6-3 mark. The Bulldogs, who began the season at 4-22, have improved their overall record to 12-25 since that time.

Moose Whathen had three hits and drove in four runs in the first game as the Bulldogs stormed back after trailing 5-0 after two and one-half innings. Whathen had a two RBI single as the Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lance Scales had the game-winning RBI driving in Tristan Cummings with a two-out single.

Chris Morrison picked up the win on the mound going the distance to even his record at 3-3. He allowed seven hits and five runs, four of which were earned, through seven innings. He struck out four and walked four in the complete-game win.

In the second game, SWOSU finally got to a tiring Cameron pitcher Ryan Bengert in the seventh inning after mustering just two hits and one run through the first six innings. Mark Cole reached on a one-out single and then advanced when Cummings reached safely on a misplayed gound ball by the Aggies.

Whathen then again delivered in the clutch with a one-out single that scored Cole to tie the game at 2-2. Cummings moved to third with only one out. Scales then lifted a foul ball that Cameron second baseman Blake Hughes made a diving, back-to-the-plate catch near the foul line fence. Scales alertly tagged and beat Hughes’ throw to the plate as the Bulldogs celebrated the win.

SWOSU will look to hold its lead in the LSC North when they host last-placed East Central University in a doubleheader Wednesday in Weatherford. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
