SURE-STEP
Purpose of the Program
The SURE-STEP at SWOSU Program seeks to increase the number of students pursuing and receiving associates or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program will initiate proven strategies to encourage connecting among the students, the disciplines, and the faculty to promote critical and formal thinking within the disciplines.
The program intends to recruit 20 qualified students. Recruited students are required to enroll in our 4 week summer bridge program to qualify for the program benefits. In these 4 weeks, students will receive training in the STEM areas and skills required to be successful in college. After successful completion of the summer bridge program, students will be qualified for the benefits of the program during their first academic year.
The program will hire 5 Supplemental Instructors (SI’s) to help students with any difficulties they face with course work during their first academic year at school.
The eligibility requirements for the program:
- Be an underrepresented or minority graduating high school senior
- Have been admitted to SWOSU
- Have a minimum ACT score of 20 or be admitted alternatively with a requirement to participate in the Bridge Program
- Planning to major in a STEM discipline
- Successful completion of our 4 week Summer Bridge program.
Benefits of the Program:
Students who complete the Bridge Program successfully will be entered in the SURE-STEP program and will receive a $1,000 stipend and 6 credit hours per semester waiver for the first year. SI help will also be provided for the first year of study at SWOSU.
